Ready Set Go…On the Road

The Desert Mountain Area Health Education Center teamed up with the Clint Independent School District’s Mountain View Health Professions Academy to bring the “Ready Set Go…On the Road” health care career-education program to Van Horn High School on Nov. 16, 2017 in Van Horn, Texas.

Presenters included Ogechika Alozie, M.D., M.P.H., TTUHSC El Paso’s chief health informatics officer, and Josh Moreno-Espinoza, lead specialist at TTUHSC El Paso’s Gayle Greve Hunt School of Nursing.

Del Valle High School STEM Academy Symposium

The Office of Clinical Informatics and Digital Health (OCI) was approached by the Del Valle High School STEM Academy to increase local El Paso students’ interest in pursuing careers in the science, technology, engineering and medicine (STEM) fields, specifically in health care and biomedical sciences. With personal success stories from native El Pasoan graduates and soon-to-be-graduates of our Texas Tech University Health Science Center El Paso (TTUHSC El Paso) schools (Cheyenne Rincones, FNP-C; Alejandro Vargas; and Jesus Gamez, M.D.), OCI hosted the STEM Symposium at Del Valle High School to explain the unique opportunity TTUHSC El Paso offers to students to attain their academic goals through its esteemed programs in their home community. The keynote speakers, including Chief Medical Officer Ogechika Alozie, M.D., addressed the Del Valle High School STEM Academy, comprised of 185 students, in hopes of engendering students’ plans to apply to TTUHSC El Paso in the future. The symposium concluded with the speakers’ selection of the top three winners of a mini STEM poster contest where students presented their ideas on using the STEM field to address a community issue. The winners were awarded with prizes donated by the OCI Team.
